1 Introduction

Kalaba is a language spoken in an unspecified country. This paper gives a preliminary sketch of Kalaba morphology following a basic item-and-arrangement model. The sketch covers the following topics:

There also are three appendices. The first, Appendix A, lists morphemes arranged by morpheme type. The second, Appendix B, lists morphemes arranged by lexical category. Finally, the third, Appendix C, lists morphemes arranged by gloss.

2 Phonemes

Kalaba has the following phonemes (the first column shows the orthographic representations):

Representation Description
a low central unrounded vowel
b voiced bilabial stop
d voiced alveolar stop
e mid front unrounded vowel
f voiceless labio-dental fricative
g voiced velar stop
i high front unrounded vowel
k voiceless velar stop
l alveolar lateral
m bilabial nasal
n alveolar nasal
ŋ velar nasal
o mid back rounded vowel
p voiceless bilabial stop
r alveolar flap
s voiceless alveolar fricative
t voiceless alveolar stop
u high back rounded vowel
v voiced labio-dental fricative
w labio-velar approximant
x voiceless velar fricative
y palatal approximate
z voiced alveolar fricative

3 Morpheme types

Words in Kalaba are formed from morphemes of 9 types. The following table lists the types along with a count of how many instances are listed in the lexicon in Appendix A.

root    12  (See appendix A.11)
stem    11  (See appendix A.13)
suffix    15  (See appendix A.14)

4 Word categories

In this analysis of Kalaba there are 13 major syntactic categories for words. Some of these in turn have subcategories. 6 Derivation

The lexicon currently contains 8 derivational affixes. A number in the table below indicates the number of derivational affixes that attach to a stem of the syntactic category named in the row label to the left and produce a stem of the syntactic category named in the column label above it. Click on the number to see a list of the actual affixes.

7 Compounding

In this analysis of Kalaba there are 6 forms of compounding.

7.1 Adj-noun with linker

Adjective with noun and an "a" linker   A compound is formed by combining a stem of the category on the left with a stem of the category on the right:

adj  N

This is a headed construction in which the right-hand stem is the head. Thus the resulting compound has the category of N.

7.2 Adverb-noun --> intransitive verb, ic:2

This compound rule does not have a description. Please add one explaining the nature of this compound rule.  A compound is formed by combining a stem of the category on the left with a stem of the category on the right:

Adv  N

This is a non-headed construction; the resulting compound has the category of intrans.

7.3 Noun-adverb -> intransitive verb, ic:2

This compound rule does not have a description. Please add one explaining the nature of this compound rule.  A compound is formed by combining a stem of the category on the left with a stem of the category on the right:

N  Adv

This is a non-headed construction; the resulting compound has the category of intrans.

7.4 Noun-Intransitive verb

This compound rule does not have a description. Please add one explaining the nature of this compound rule.  A compound is formed by combining a stem of the category on the left with a stem of the category on the right:

N  intrans

This is a headed construction in which the right-hand stem is the head. Thus the resulting compound has the category of intrans.

7.5 Noun-transitive verb

This compound rule does not have a description. Please add one explaining the nature of this compound rule.  A compound is formed by combining a stem of the category on the left with a stem of the category on the right:

N  trans

This is a headed construction in which the right-hand stem is the head. Thus the resulting compound has the category of trans.

7.6 Verb-adverb

Adverb incorporation   A compound is formed by combining a stem of the category on the left with a stem of the category on the right:

V  Adv

This is a headed construction in which the left-hand stem is the head. Thus the resulting compound has the category of V.

8 Allomorphy

Kalaba has phonological conditioning of allomorphs.

8.1 Natural Classes

The following natural classes of phonemes are involved in the conditioning environments:

Class Phonemes Class Name Class Description
+cor,+vd   d  z  l  r  y Voiced coronals The set of voiced (non-nasal) coronals
C   p  b  t  d  k  g  f  v  s  z  x  m  n  ŋ  l  r  w  y Consonants The set of consonants
V   i  e  a  o  u Vowels The set of vowels

8.2 Phonological Environments

The following is a complete list of the phonological environments that condition allomorphs in this analysis:

Name Representation Count
after consonant / [C] _ 3 instances
after vowel / [V] _ 4 instances
before voiced coronals / _ [+cor,+vd] 2 instances
before voiced labial stop / _ b 2 instances
before voiced velar stop / _ g 2 instances
redup before CV / _ [C^1][V^1] 1 instance
redup before V / _ [V^1] 2 instances
standalone word / # _ # 1 instance

The following is a complete list of the phonological environments that condition infix positioning in this analysis:

Name Representation Count
after (stem initial) consonant / #[C] _ 1 instance
before a vowel / _ [V] 1 instance

The following is a complete list of the phonological environments that are not being used:

Name Representation Count
BES / _ i _ 0 instances

8.3 Inflection Classes

Kalaba also has allomorphy that is lexically conditioned by inflection class.

The category Noun has the following inflection classes:

1st nominal declension  2 stems; 8 affixes
2nd nominal declension  2 stems; 6 affixes
3rd nominal declension  0 stems; 1 affixes

The category Verb has the following inflection classes:

1st verbal conjugation  6 stems; 3 affixes
2nd verbal conjugation  6 stems; 3 affixes

9 Residue

9.1 Unclassified Affixes

Kalaba has the following unclassified affixes. (Unclassified affixes are those which have not yet been classified as being either inflectional or derivational.) Any categories which the affix can attach to are shown. If none are shown, then the affix can attach to any category.

-kes  '???'
-ni-  'who.knows'

9.2 Ad hoc constraints

The following sets of morphemes or allomorphs never co-occur in the same wordform, but the morphological description given above does not yet offer an explanation. They are listed as follows:

9.2.1 Grouped ad hoc sequences

The following sets of ad hoc constraints are grouped together with some kind of common factor.
