Choose "Variant of" entry or sense

1. In the Navigation Pane, click Lexicon, and then click Lexicon Edit.

2. In the Entries pane, click the desired variant entry.

3. In the Entry pane, if you cannot see the Variant of field, show hidden fields or add another Variant Info section.

4. Click the Variant of field, and then click the ellipsis button that appears.

   The Choose Lexical Entry or Sense dialog box appears.

5. In the Writing System box, select the writing system of the form (lexeme, citation or allomorph) or gloss of the entry you want to find.

6. In the Find box, enter the form or gloss of the entry you want to find.

7. In the Lexical Entries pane, click the desired entry.

   If the desired entry is not listed, do any if the following:

   • Change the spelling in the Find box.

   • Select a different writing system in the Writing System box.

   • Click Create to open the New Entry dialog box.

8. In the Step 2: Select Entry or Sense pane, do one of the following:

   • Click Entry.

   • Click Specific Sense, and then select a sense.

9. Click OK.

   The selected entry or sense appears in the Variant of field. Also, in the entry you selected, the entry appears in one of these fields: If you selected the entry, it appears in a Variant Form field; If you selected a sense of the entry, it appears in a Variant of Sense field.

   Other fields that you need to specify that the form is a variant are added under the Variant Type field. This is equivalent to clicking Lexeme Form is a variant on the Information bar menu button menu.

   The homograph number will appear, if the selected entry has one. The sense number also appears, if a particular sense was selected.

Important

As discussed in Insert a variant form, you insert a variant form in a lexical entry as a variant of that entry. You can display the variant form as an entry in the Entry pane.

Then, for each variant form that is related to multiple lexical entries, you have these options:

• You can choose additional entries in an existing Variants of field.

• You can insert an additional set of variant-related fields for cases when you need to choose a different variant type, Show Minor Entry field selection or summary.

If you do not choose an entry or sense for the Variant of field, then the Variant Type and Variant of field set are deleted when you leave the entry.
